Swampscott High School students interested in playing boys ice hockey will once again be able to wear the traditional blue and white uniforms on the rink. A plan is in place to bring high school boys hockey back to Swampscott starting in the 2026-27 school year.
Superintendent Jason Calichman announced the return of Big Blue Hockey at an April 30 School Committee meeting. Previously, Swampscott players travelled to play on Peabody High School’s team as part of a co-op.
In the 2026-27 school year, Swampscott’s team will compete only at the junior varsity level. Calichman said the hope is to field a varsity team as early as the 2027-28 school year.
Next year, students who make the varsity team will continue the co-op at Peabody High School.
Athletic Director Kelly Wolff said the team will play its home games at Salem State University.
A meeting was held for interested players and families on April 15. Calichman said there are a lot of current sixth and seventh grade students interested in the program.
“I am ecstatic that a sport is back,” said School Committee Chair Glenn Paster. “We want to do everything to keep as many kids in this district, in these amazing schools that we can. Kudos to everyone involved for bringing this back. Hockey is not an easy thing to bring back.”
Swampscott High School last fielded a boys varsity ice hockey team in the 2023-24 school year.
