Rosalie Reddin and Maddie Lilley have been selected as this year’s recipients of the Swampscott War Memorial Scholarship, an annual award recognizing graduating Swampscott High School seniors who are the children of military veterans.
The scholarships are awarded each year by the Swampscott War Memorial Scholarship Fund Committee, whose members review applications, resumes and personal essays before selecting recipients through a ranking system. Scholarships are given to students who are the sons or daughters of military veterans.
“We’re just psyched to help everyone out,” said Susan Bishop, chair of the committee.
The committee has awarded the scholarships annually since 1950. For many members, the program is especially meaningful because they are Swampscott High School alumni, and Watts and fellow committee member Christopher Ratley are both former scholarship recipients.
This year, 17 Swampscott High School seniors applied for the scholarships, submitting records of their extracurricular activities, community service and essays describing how growing up in a military family has shaped their lives.
Committee members independently rank the finalists, with a point system determining the scholarship recipients. Organizers said the process ensures each member’s evaluation carries equal weight.
“I love reading about the students and how they have been impacted by military life,” said Watts.
To help sustain the scholarship fund, the committee launched its Buy A Brick Program after donations to the fund began to decline in recent years. Commemorative bricks are installed on the Town Hall lawn, and the committee plans to add a sign with a QR code so visitors can learn more about the program.
Community members can also purchase bricks at the committee’s booth during the Swampscott Farmers Market on August 23, September 20, October 18 and November 23 where bricks can be purchased.
