Swampscott police identified a man whose presence near the elementary school raisedconcerns during theYMCA’s after-school program Monday. He is “not a suspect of any crime or wrongdoing.”

“Active enhanced security steps have been implemented in an abundance of caution at Swampscott Schools while this matter is under investigation,” the police wrote.

On Monday around 3 p.m., a YMCA program staff member noticed the man park an SUV in the back of the church parking lot. He then entered the woods next to the school. The staff member reported the man because he appeared to be wearing clothing resembling a security or law enforcement uniform, Swampscott Elementary School Principal Lori Sanborn wrote.

“He walked in the woods for approximately eight minutes and left the area in the vehicle, at which point police were notified,” Sanborn wrote. “YMCA staff brought the children inside for precautionary reasons and the program continued without incident.”

The police described the man as wearing a black sweatshirt with the word “security” on the back.

Swampscott Police increased their presence at the school during drop-off and pickup Tuesday.

Police later identified the man but did not release his name.

“Officers spoke with him and explained how his attire yesterday may have been perceived by others and why it raised concerns,” the police said. “He acknowledged and agreed.”

It is unknown if the man is related to the individual High School Principal Emily Zotto had notified staff about on Monday.

Zotto shared in an email that Matie Zaki received a no trespass order. According to his LinkedIn profile, Zaki is a real estate agent in Brookline at Red Tree Real Estate.

“This man is not allowed anywhere on SPS properties including all schools, parking lots, fields, etc.,” Zotto said. “I hate to alarm people but from a behavioral perspective, his recent behavior is at best highly unusual and unsettling.”
