Three women, hailing from New Zealand, Croatia and Bulgaria, ran through Lynn into Swampscott on Tuesday morning. They took turns carrying a torch, lit with a bright flame.
Harita Davies of New Zealand, Gordana Petrovic of Croatia and Violeta Angelova of Bulgaria are three of many runners from around the world taking part in the Sri Chinmoy Oneness-Home Peace Run – A relay that will touch all 50 states and cover 10,000 miles.
The Peace Run, founded in 1987, is meant to spread the message that world peace begins in the hearts of people all over the world. This year, the route covers the United States in honor of the nation’s 250th anniversary.
“We run with a flaming torch which is a symbol for the yearning for peace that we really feel that everybody has inside their hearts,” said Davies. “It’s meant to share the message that everybody makes a difference in the world and that if we can take a minute to connect with that yearning for peace and happiness, then that’s what will give us real fulfillment and happiness.”
After stopping in Boston earlier Tuesday, the group kept heading north and took a pit stop at Swampscott Town Hall.

Petrovic said the friendliness displayed by Swampscott and North Shore residents was unprecedented.
“We’ve never met so many friendly people,” said Petrovic. “It’s really amazing. It’s hard even to run because people want to stop you and talk. They are very, very friendly.”
The route started in New York City in April before heading south to Florida and then westward. Massachusetts is one of the final stops of this rendition of the run. The torch will continue down to Providence and New Haven before ending back in New York, where it began.
Despite long days of running, the trio of women agreed that they were not tired and still full of energy because of the message they carry with them.

“In one way, every day is big and tiring, but in another way, you get so sustained and energized by the people you meet along the way, by your team and by sharing such a positive message,” said Davies. “You get such a warm feeling in your heart when you can share something that makes people smile.”
Davies said taking part in the run has helped her realize just how many good people are out there all around the world.
Petrovic said her favorite part was the happiness that surrounds the group and the run.
“It feels like a perfect world,” said Petrovic. “We’re helping connect all parts of the world.”
