Every time the ball came anywhere close to the Swampscott soccer net, senior goalkeeper Eve Byrne was there to scoop it up, recording 16 saves as the Big Blue girls soccer team and Marblehead High School played to a scoreless 0-0 draw at Blocksidge Field on Monday night.
Both sides defended their nets tenaciously and limited scoring chances for their opponents. Play opened up in the last ten minutes of the game, but neither Swampscott nor its rivals were able to find the back of the net.
The Big Blue have yet to allow a single goal in their first three games of the 2026 season. After opening up their schedule with a commanding 9-0 win over Gloucester High School, they have drawn matches with Salem High School and Marblehead 0-0.
“The Marblehead-Swampscott game is always one that’s high intensity,” said Swampscott Head Coach Jaymie Caponigro. “Both teams brought it, which is great to see. We worked really hard, all the way from our offensive line to our defensive line, and it’s unfortunate that we couldn’t capitalize.”
Despite the draw, Caponigro said she saw a lot of promise on the field that the Big Blue will be able to build on as the season progresses.
“I think we have really good leadership from our senior class,” said Caponigro. “We have nine seniors and a lot of them have been playing heavy minutes for us since they were freshmen. It’s great to see not only their progression through the program, but also turning it over and helping the younger girls.”
Caponigro said having Byrne at the back playing goalkeeper makes life a little easier for the other ten players on the field.
“She’s been in net for us since she was a freshman,” Caponigro said of Byrne. “She definitely commands the field and helps with our back line, so having her back there helps keep our composure.”

Byrne is a great communicator on the field, which Caponigro said is a crucial quality to have as a goalkeeper.
Caponigro said she liked what she saw from the trio of Jane Raymond, Valentine Park and Greta Siefkin.
“They really played well together in the midfield, and we also had high pressure from both Lyla and Chloe Rogers,” said Caponigro.
The Big Blue (1-0-2) now turns it attention to Saugus High School, who will come to Blocksidge Field for a match on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m.
