Undefeated and Unstoppable: Swampscott Boys’ Cross Country Caps Perfect Season with Win Over Danvers

The Swampscott boys’ varsity cross country team has officially had an undefeated season, as they won their meet against Danvers High School on Monday.

“It feels great,” said Coach Joe Tenney. “

The boys’ cross country team hosted Danvers High School at Upper Jackson Park, closing out their season with a 5-0-1 record. The Swampscott boys had won against Marblehead High School (22-33), Salem High School (18-44), Masconomet Regional High School (22-34) and Beverly High School (26-32). The team tied Peabody Veterans Memorial High School at 28-28. In cross country, the lower score wins as the team’s score is the sum of the places of its top five finishers.

“They ran a tough race in Peabody,” Tenney said. “It’s tough to rely on one person. You have to have your top seven, and even beyond your top seven. Every runner counts, every place they’re displacing a runner from another school, which is a huge thing.”

The Swampscott boys took the first eight places in the race:

  1. Simon Brown
  2. Isiah Costa Creveling
  3. Anthony Colella
  4. Atticus Jakious
  5. Holden Hersey
  6. Miles Brown
  7. Lincoln Geaney
  8. Caiden Lau

Stephen Mastroianni and Thomas Arrington rounded out the team in fifteenth and sixteenth places respectively.

Eli Cobbett did not run on Monday so that he can compete at the league meet on Saturday.

“Their hard work and dedication doesn’t go unnoticed,” Tenney said.

Simon and Isiah took first and second place during their senior meet, their final home race as members of the Swampscott cross country team.

“With how the season went, it was a great way to finish,” Simon said. “Finishing together was great.”

Simon also added that the team would not have been able to have been undefeated without their coaching staff.

Anthony agreed, adding that the season had been “compounding work.”

“It’s great that we’ve all been pushing,” Caiden said. “We’ve had a lot of PRs.”

While the girls’ cross country team had a record of 1-4 prior to the Danvers meet, sophomore Annabelle Averett did break the course record this season.

“She’s been phenomenal,” Tenney said.

Annabelle said she’s excited for the upcoming winter and spring track seasons.

“I’m excited because I want to PR in the mile or two mile,” Annabelle said, adding that it’s her goal to break a five-minute mile. “It feels awesome to end the season like this.”

During the Danvers meet, Annabelle crossed the finish line hand-in-hand with two fellow runners.

The boys group runs again on Saturday in Gloucester.
