Swampscott Town Clerk Resigns Amid Series of Town Hall Vacancies

Town Administrator Nick Connors confirmed at Wednesday’s Select Board meeting that Town Clerk Jared LaLiberte has stepped down from his position.

LaLiberte will be taking a new position in Dracut, according to Connors. He recently earned the prestigious Certified Massachusetts Municipal Clerk designation from the Massachusetts Town Clerks Association.

“We had a small gathering to thank him for everything he did in the community, and we wish him the best,” Connors said.

Assistant Town Clerk Michael Brison was appointed interim town clerk following a Select Board vote on Wednesday.

“Mike has been fantastic,” Connors said. “It could be a real benefit to the community, based on his work starting as a senior work off and transitioning into a role that is more permanent and playing a really important role in Town Hall, helping to keep things running smoothly.”

Several other positions remain open within Town Hall. Connors reported Wednesday that “we have an offer out” for the customer service position. Three firefighter candidates are also undergoing background checks and reference reviews.

“They’ll all be great additions to the team,” Connors said. “I met with them. They all seem particularly interested in serving here in Swampscott, which is great and hopefully an indicator that they’ll be committed here for the longterm.”

Open positions also include a police officer, town accountant, and town assessor.

The town accountant position is particularly important, as former Director of Finance and Administration Amy Sarro and former Assistant Town Accountant Trang Vu stepped down in late June and July, respectively.

The position offers a salary range of $90,000 to $120,000. According to the posting, the town accountant will be “responsible for managing the town’s daily accounting activities in accordance with Massachusetts General Law.” The role also includes “overseeing the fiscal integrity” of Swampscott by maintaining the general ledger, managing accounts payable, monitoring the budget, and preparing financial reports.

The town assessor position lists a salary of “$80,000 +/-.” The full-time assessor will oversee the Assessing Department, including the valuation of real and personal property and the administration of excise taxes.

“The goal is to get through hiring processes, attract great candidates, and hopefully find folks that want to spend the time that I’ve demonstrated I want to and that these department heads have demonstrated over time,” Connors previously told the Swampscott Tides. “It’s really a question of finding the right candidates and making sure they’re a fit for Swampscott and the teams that are hiring and going from there, but I think we’ll get them filled.”

Interested applicants should email their résumé and cover letter to hr@swampscottma.gov.
