As the holiday season wraps up, many residents are left wondering what to do with their Christmas trees. Fortunately, Swampscott has designated a specific disposal date and issued guidance for additional holiday items.
Trees will be picked up during the week of January 18 on residents’ normal trash day. Pickup, however, will be delayed by one day on January 20 and for the remainder of the week due to Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
The town requests that all ornaments, tinsel, lights, stands, plastic bags and other non-organic items be removed from trees prior to collection. Any recyclable items may be placed curbside, as Swampscott residents are permitted unlimited recycling service. All recyclables must be placed in a recycling barrel or bin clearly labeled “recycle” or marked with a large recycling symbol.
Collected trees will be shredded, with the resulting wood chips typically composted or used as mulch.
Other yard waste, including leaves and tree or bush trimmings, will be collected on regularly scheduled days, with the next pickup scheduled for the week of April 20.
According to the Solid Waste Advisory Committee, decorations, wreaths, wrapping paper, confetti, tissue paper, tinsel and cellophane should be placed in the trash. Brown kraft wrapping paper, cardboard boxes, wine and champagne bottles, and greeting cards may be recycled.
Residents with styrofoam or metal items to dispose of after the holidays may drop them off at the Department of Public Works yard, at 200 Paradise Road, on the last Saturday of each month from 8 a.m. to noon. Styrofoam will not be recycled.
