Swampscott High Science Fair Showcases Student Innovation, Real-World Research

The Swampscott High School hosted a science fair expo, highlighting a variety of projects from UV degradation across sunscreen brands to visualizing sound and treating Parkinson’s with exercise.

“It’s learning at a different level, a deeper level of thinking, they’re applying what they’re learning throughout the year into something specific,” said science teacher Nicole Greenway

The fair has been put on for about a decade, Chemistry teacher Boriana Georgieva said. Only honors students are required to participate, but Georgieva said students from other classes were welcomed and encouraged to participate.

Georgieva said through the fair, students in chemistry are able to take those skills into physics the next year and other courses going forward.

“We wanted to make sure that kids would develop scientific skills,” Georgieva said. “They have to know how to write the paper, do the research, and present information. We made the fair as a celebration of what they learned.”
