After a convincing win on home turf in the first round of the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) state tournament, the Swampscott High School boys lacrosse team saw their season come to an end on Monday with an 11-6 loss to Weston High School.
The Big Blue came into the match as underdogs as the 26th Seed against Weston’s 7th Seed, but the team took a 3-1 lead early in the second quarter.
After Weston scored the first goal of the game, John Von Barta fired home a shot with just under six minutes remaining in the first quarter to put the Swampscott on the scoreboard.
Swampscott scored the next two to take a 3-1 lead, but Weston netted the final five goals of the first half and the Big Blue entered the locker room trailing 6-3 at the half.
After the half, the drought continued for Swampscott as Weston scored twice to take an 8-3 lead.
Swampscott senior Captain Jason Rothwell found the back of the net to end the cold spell in the third quarter.
The Big Blue scored two of the first three goals of the fourth quarter to cut the deficit to just three with four minutes left in regulation, 9-6. However, Weston kept the Big Blue out of its net for the remainder of the game and moved on with an 11-6 victory.
Swampscott finished the 2026 season with a 10-10 record and a taste of playoff victory. The two schools also met in the postseason last year, with Weston winning 14-6.
