As the high school winter sports season nears a close, Swampscott student-athletes will be competing in key tournament games and matches in the coming weeks.

Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) tournament brackets were released on Saturday for winter team sports. Two wrestlers on the Swampscott/Marblehead wrestling team, senior Liam O’Brien and sophomore Anna Cruikshank, will compete in the Massachusetts All-State Meet in Springfield on Sunday, March 1 and Monday, March 2.

Both the boys and girls basketball teams also have qualified for the Division 3 state tournament after successful regular seasons.

The first team in action will be the girls basketball team, who will play host to Tantasqua Regional High School in a preliminary round game on Wednesday, February 25 at 7 p.m. The Big Blue is seeded 31st and Tantasqua is the 34th seed. If Swampscott wins, they will travel across the state to take on second seeded Pittsfield High School at a time and date to be determined.

The girls basketball team finished the regular season with a 12-8 record, highlighted by a six-game winning streak at the end of January. Last season, Swampscott won their preliminary round game before falling in the next round to Foxborough High School.

Swampscott’s boys basketball team finished the regular season 16-4 and is the 4th seed in the state tournament. Because of the team’s strong seed, they will have a bye in the preliminary round. The team’s first game will be played at home during the round of 32 at a time and date to be determined against the winner of a preliminary round game between Nantucket High School and Oakmont Regional High School.

The boys started the season with nine consecutive wins. They have gotten back on track after a short rough patch and enter the playoff tournament on a five-game winning streak.

Last year, the Big Blue lost to Apponequet Regional High School in the round of 32.
