Buy-A-Brick Program Helps Fund Scholarship for Vetrans’ Children

A program giving Swampscott residents the chance to honor loved ones with a lifelong relic, is also helping a committee in town present scholarships to high school seniors.

Swampscott’s War Memorial Committee was founded in 1950, and ever since it has presented scholarships to students who are children of military veterans.

Last year, the committee launched a Buy a Brick program. The first engraved bricks, now installed on the Town Hall lawn, honor deceased loved ones, recognize veterans and celebrate young children with a lasting tribute they can enjoy as they grow up.

The committee’s efforts were done to honor veterans. It was also in part due to the diminishing money available to it in recent years.

“We thought of what we could do to get money in to make sure it doesn’t run out down the road,” War Memorial Committee Member Chris Ratley said.

In its first year, the Buy a Brick program helped the War Memorial Committee raise over $12,000. The committee typically gives awards $2,000 to $3,000 in scholarships each year.

The next batch of bricks will line a path connecting Town Hall with the Swampscott Public Library.

“It’s really started off well,” said Ratley.

The first bricks were installed in November.

“We had quite a few people sign up initially,” said Ratley. “It’s nice having something with your name on it that you know is going to be there for a long, long time.”

Two different sizes of bricks are available for purchase. The smaller of the two, 4-by-8 inches, costs $100 and can fit three lines of text. The larger brick can fit six lines of text and costs $225.
