As music filled the streets of Swampscott during Porchfest, lemonade stands popped up across town, all for a greater cause.

Dave Aldrich of Grab the Bagel launched a lemonade stand initiative on Saturday to raise funds in memory of the 27 girls and counselors who died in the July 4 flash flood on the Guadalupe River. Heavy rains caused the river to rise rapidly, resulting in a catastrophic flood that swept through Camp Mystic, a private all-girls Christian summer camp in Texas. The devastating flood also claimed the lives of 108 people in the Hill Country region.

“I’m on a mission to make a difference,” Aldrich told the Swampscott Tides.

Originally stationed at Town Hall on Saturday, Aldrich brought his well-known bagel bus to several Porchfest locations, offering lemonade, apple cider bagels, hot cider, and chocolate chip cookies from Glee’s Goodies.

“This is the launch of my fall initiative,” Aldrich told the Swampscott Tides. “This is just the beginning. This has become something bigger than itself.”

On Elmwood Street, Anthony Bova and his son Leon also joined the lemonade stand efforts. Bova’s father-in-law, Assistant Town Manager Michael Brison, performed at the house while Bova and Leon served both regular and strawberry lemonade.

“It’s part of the larger effort, so we got involved with it,” Bova told the Swampscott Tides. “It’s a nice opportunity to be out and about in the town and get a feel for what true community feels like.”

Aldrich will return to Swampscott on Sunday for the farmers market, where the fundraiser will continue. He also plans to extend the effort to the Marblehead farmers market, with the campaign concluding at the Lobster Room Cafe, next to the Beacon Restaurant and Warwick Cinemas in Marblehead, on October 4.
