‘Like nothing I’ve ever seen’: Swampscott Elementary School Finishes Year With A Bang

The 740 Swampscott Elementary School students were able to enjoy the school’s first field day celebrations on Tuesday at Phillips Park, after coordination from 190 parent volunteers as well as internal staff.

“(It is) off the charts, like nothing I’ve ever seen,” said Vice Principal Jason Knowles.

Michael Amaral, one of the three physical education teachers at the Swampscott Elementary School, said this year’s field day was structured very similarly to ones he hosted at Swampscott’s three previous elementary schools.

Amaral, who has worked within the district for nine years, helped with the celebrations at Hadley Elementary, the Stanley School and the Clarke School. This was the first year the three previous elementary schools merged into one new building.

“The only thing we really focused on this time was making sure that the area’s safe, everyone knows what they’re doing and what their jobs are, and just making sure that all the kids have something to do for the entire time,” Amaral said.

The field day was a carnival with a dunk tank, bowling, as well as racing games and inflatable field games. Students were able to take part in cup pong as well as a fishing game. Others raced on blow up animals.

The grades were split between older and younger students, and the groups switched sides of the field after lunch so that everyone could experience all of the activities.

Mary Powers, the school’s dean of students, commented on the planning and preparation that went into organizing the day.

“There’s just so many children and the logistics that are involved in making sure that every child has full equal access,” Powers said.

Powers said field day is the “perfect activity” to round out the first year of Swampscott Elementary School, which had focused on developing new traditions for the students separate from those at the three previous individual elementary buildings.

“I think it’s been a success,” Powers said.
