Photos of the Week: January 17-23

The week began with snow, and now Swampscott is gearing up for another snowy weekend, with the town potentially seeing more than a foot of snow, according to OpenSnow.com.

The weather didn’t stop protesters from taking to the streets on Tuesday. January 20 marked the one-year anniversary of President Donald Trump taking office for his second term in the White House. Swampscott residents joined the demonstration because, as one protester put it, “dissent is my civic duty.” The protest was part of a nationwide walkout on Tuesday, organized by the Women’s March.

Locally, there was also significant discussion within Swampscott’s government this week. The Zoning Board met again with B’nai B’rith regarding the Veterans Crossing housing project, and there will be two more meetings before the board’s vote, with two more meetings scheduled before the board’s vote. The Board of Health met to review next steps following the resignation of the public health nurse. The Select Board, Finance Committee, and School Committee held a tri-board meeting to discuss the school district’s financial and student protection obligations, as well as expenses related to Nahant students. The School Committee then met separately on Thursday to review its budget.

The seven announced candidates for Massachusetts’ 6th Congressional District gathered Wednesday at a Democratic candidates’ forum, discussing topics ranging from party leadership to U.S. involvement in conflicts around the world. Participants included John Beccia, Bethany Andres-Beck, Jamie Belsito, Rick Jakious, Dan Koh, Tram Nguyen, and Mariah Lancaster.

The Swampscott Tides also launched a “masterpiece moments” series highlighting art at the Swampscott Public Schools. Coverage includes the elementary, middle and high schools, as well as profiles on Edi Rovi and Brennan Natoli.
