Toys came to life for a group of local children on Saturday as RoboThink hosted a class in partnership with the Swampscott Recreation Department.
RoboThink is a worldwide STEM, coding, robotics and engineering program that introduces students to new concepts. Attending children became engineers in training, starting from scratch using materials to create their own robots that could be remotely controlled. Saturday’s program is part of the Swampscott Recreation Department’s wide variety of offerings during February Break.
The theme of the day for Saturday was amusement park tycoon. Some children stuck to the theme while others put their own twist on their projects. Robots danced across the room as their operators watched in excitement.

“I love seeing the creativity,” said Perla Gonzales, who taught the class for RoboThink.
After trying out their robots, it was time to sit down and make adjustments and additions. Gonzalez showed the group how certain pieces work and was there for assistance when children needed it.
“Some of them just pick it up so fast,” said Gonzalez. “They build one or two robots each day.”
Saturday’s class was part of a six-week program, which gives participants nine hours in total to learn about making robots.
“It’s pretty similar to legos and we’re throwing in gears and batteries to make things move,” said Gonzalez.
Gonzalez said RoboThink programs give children a fun outlet where they can really get creative.
“I think it gives them a chance to learn but also have fun at the same time,” said Gonzalez.
