The Students of Color Association (SOCA) hosted a jeopardy-like event for the Swampscott High School on Thursday, testing the audience with trivia around Black History Month.
Black History Month initially lasted for a week before it became a month-long observation in 1970. The annual observation commemorates important people and events in Black history.
A theme for Black History Month is chosen each year by the ASALH. This year’s is a century of Black History commemorations.
Ralph Edwards, a co-founder of Swampscott Unites, Respects Embraces (S.U.R.E.) Diversity, read a proclamation for the town around Black History Month on Wednesday at the Select Board meeting.
A similar event will be held for the public on Tuesday, February 24 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the high school.
The annual Black History Celebration will include music from the Swampscott High School band and chorus, creative projects and presentations by students. There will be family art activities and food as well.
S.U.R.E. Diversity will host the event in conjunction with the town, Swampscott Public Schools, Congregation Shirat Hayam and Justice for All.
