The rain had stopped, the lights were on and the stage was set for the Summer Snaps women’s flag football league playoffs on Thursday night on the turf at Blocksidge Field.

After two first round games and two semifinal games, Brady’s Bunch and the Salty Beaches will be moving on to the championship game next Thursday. The two teams have been the league’s strongest this season, losing just one game collectively.

With some consolation bracket games going as well, the stadium was full of colorful uniforms and excited children cheering on their favorite teams.

Kristin Doerrer, a co-founder of Summer Snaps, said the quality of play has notably improved from the start of the season to the end, especially for teams new to the league this summer.

“We started the season with four teams that were brand new,” said Doerrer. “The level of play from when we started the season to where we are now is tremendous. We’ve had teams score their first touchdowns and get their first interceptions.”

Doerrer’s team, Kiss My Pass, lost in heartbreaking fashion in the first round after 24k Chaos scored a touchdown and converted a two-point conversion attempt with just three seconds left in the game to win by one point.

“We were good this season,” Doerrer said of her team. “We had a lot of injuries. It’s summer, people go on vacation, but we had a great season and played really well. I’m super proud of all my teammates. We’re all the best of friends and we’ll get ‘em next year.”

Doerrer said the strong attendance and participation from players to families and friends shows the league has brought the community together.

“The camaraderie and community we’ve seen built this season is pretty incredible,” she said. “You have women here from all over town. You have people here from other towns that play with friends from high school. You have families that come out, I mean look at all these kids, grandparents and parents. There’s a real sense of community that brings people together in a way that I don’t think we could ever imagine could be this big.”
