Two Swampscott High School teams received donations from their booster clubs at Thursday’s School Committee meeting.
The Big Blue Baseball Boosters donated $7,980 to fund additional baseball coaches.
“We all wish we could fund a full program with multiple coaches,” said School Committee Chair Glenn Paster. “If it wasn’t for the Boosters and the parents, that couldn’t happen.”
Paster also joked the donation was “well spent,” noting the baseball team recently won its conference championship for the first time in nearly three decades. Swampscott earned its 13th consecutive victory last week and now prepares for the second round of the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association state tournament on Monday, June 1, after receiving a first-round bye.
“The stars have aligned,” Head Coach Joe Caponigro previously told the Swampscott Tides. “A big goal was to get in the tournament, and then win a conference championship. And we want to make some noise in the state tournament.”
The School Committee extended its best wishes to the team.
“Best of luck as you continue and start the tournament,” Paster said.
The Swampscott Track Boosters also donated $1,000 to fund an additional outdoor track coach.
“The students who run track and participate in the field events are really pleased,” Paster said. “We should also point out that the town was generous enough to approve a very large expenditure of $1 million to rebuild the track, which is 20-plus years old, which I think is a great thing for not only the community but also here in the district.”
Town Meeting members approved $1 million to resurface the track at Upper Jackson Park as part of the recommended capital projects for fiscal year 2027. The money will be borrowed from the general fund.
The 2026 spring track season marked the second year the Jackson Park track has been out of commission. Head Coach Joe Tenney said the track has needed repairs for over a decade.
“We ask parents to pay an awful lot of money and to not have proper facilities. I think the town recognized that,” Paster said.
The School Committee also approved donations to support students participating in the annual Washington, D.C., trip, as well as the advanced manufacturing program.
