The Swampscott Commission on Disability is seeking donations to install three benches along local beaches.
The benches are intended to help make Swampscott’s beaches more accessible to all. Donations will fund three 8-foot-long benches made of composite wood. One bench will be placed at Eisman’s Beach, and two will be at New Ocean Beach.
“We live in such a beautiful town right on the ocean, so the idea that many of our residents cannot access, or fully utilize, our beaches due to accessibility issues does not sit well with us, the Swampscott Commission on Disability,” Lauren Shrestha, the chair, told the Swampscott Tides. “We hope by adding benches, part of an ongoing effort to improve accessibility to our beaches, that more residents can enjoy our beautiful coastal views.”
Each bench costs between $1,400 and $1,500, according to the commission. The town will handle installation and maintenance.
Vice Chair Jeffry Brand and member Kevin Shields have championed the project, securing approvals and confirming that each site is suitable for a bench.
“We look forward to continuing our mission of increasing accessibility in the community,” Shrestha said.
Donors can request a custom engraving on their bench, creating “a lasting tribute or message in a cherished public space,” the commission said.
To donate, contact Natalie Swanstrom, business manager for the Department of Public Works, at 781-596-8860.
