A total of 118 positions will be on the ballot in the upcoming local elections, and residents interested in running are encouraged to begin the nomination process.

Swampscott’s local elections will be held on Tuesday, April 28. There are 18 Town Meeting Member positions open in each of the town’s six precincts, along with elected office positions ranging from town moderator to different board member positions.

The available elected positions include:

  • Town Moderators, for a one-year term
  • Select Board Member, two open positions for three-year terms
  • Board of Assessors Member, for a three-year term
  • Board of Health Member, for a three-year term
  • School Committee Member, three open positions with two for three-year terms and one for a two-year term
  • Trustee of the Public Library, for a three-year term
  • Planning Board Member, for a five-year term
  • Town Meeting Member, with 18 open positions in each of the six precincts for three-year terms

Residents interested in running may pick up nomination papers at the town clerk’s office at Town Hall. The deadline to obtain nomination papers is Friday, March 6, at 5 p.m

Candidates must submit completed nomination papers for certification by Tuesday, March 10, at 5 p.m. That is also the last day for incumbent Town Meeting Members to notify the town clerk’s office of their intent to run for re-election.

The elected officials whose terms expire this year include: Town Moderator Michael McClung, Select Board Members Doug Thompson and David Grishman, School Committee Members John Giantis and Suzanne Wright, Public Library Trustee Debbie Friedlander, and Planning Board Chair Ted Dooley.

Town Meeting Members serve staggered three-year terms, so the 108 open positions occur each year.

It is not clear who is running for re-election, however, at this time. There is currently a vacancy on the Board of Assessors as well as one spot on the School Committee, meaning there will be no incumbent in those races. The School Committee position that will fill the space Amy OConnors left will be for two years.

Questions may be directed to the town clerk at 781-596-4167 or by email at clerks@swampscottma.gov.
