Swampscott Spring Track and Field Hits Ground Running

Swampscott High School’s boys and girls outdoor track and field teams braved cold, rainy weather on Tuesday to get the spring season started at Marblehead’s Village Elementary School.

The Big Blue took on both Marblehead and Danvers. Despite the bitter temperatures, the teams made their way onto the track and competed, unlike just days before. A week prior, the Big Blue had made the trip to Peabody Veterans High School for a meet, but it didn’t end up taking place.

Marblehead won both boys and girls meets on Tuesday, but Swampscott girls head coach Joe Tenney said it was nice to finally get the season underway.

Athletes bundled up in between competitions to cheer on their classmates in the track events like sprints and hurdles as well as the field events like discus, javelin and long jump.

“It’s going well so far,” said Tenney, who said the Big Blue are featuring many athletes on the younger side this season.

Swampscott will look to get into the win column when they compete next, on Thursday, April 16 at Peabody Veterans High School.
