Swampscott residents have a new spot in town to charge their electric vehicles, with two charging stations recently installed in the Blocksidge Field parking lot.

The additions bring the total number of publicly available chargers in town to 14. Six chargers are available at Swampscott High School, four at Swampscott Elementary School and two more at Town Hall.

The cost to use a charger is 33 cents per kilowatt-hour. Each charger has a 125-kilowatt-hour capacity, with additional fees charged if a vehicle remains connected after charging is complete.

Town Administrator Nick Connors said several sites have been evaluated in recent years as potential locations for charging stations, and Blocksidge Field appeared to be the best option.

“(Blocksidge Field) provides good public access and the electrical infrastructure was well suited to add the chargers,” said Connors.

Swampscott’s Climate Action and Resilience Committee has also provided input throughout the process, Connors said.

The equipment and installation cost the town $75,000, with an additional $60,000 made available through a grant from National Grid.

The chargers do not currently have a North American Charging Standard (NACS) plug, though one will be added at a later date. CCS1 and CHAdeMO plugs are currently available for use.

Connors said the town is continuing to evaluate potential locations and funding opportunities for additional charging stations in the future.
