When Life Gives You Lemons, Drew Domelowicz Makes a Business

With one refreshing gulp and a burst of citrus flavor, a classic summer favorite is brought to life by Sunny Daze Lemonade. Owned and operated by Swampscott resident and 15-year-old Drew Domelowicz, the business has taken the childhood dream of running a lemonade stand to a whole new level.

Sunny Daze Lemonade opened its doors – and lemon juicers – last summer with one kid and a dream. While many children aspire to open a lemonade stand to make a few bucks, few have the ambition to turn that idea into a growing business.

“That summer I was looking for a job, a way to get out of the house and I was 14 so I couldn’t really go apply to Walmart or work at a restaurant,” Drew said, “and this is way more fun.”

Since the stand’s opening, Sunny Daze Lemonade has earned a reputation for its fresh-squeezed lemonade and unique flavors. The inspiration for such a stand came from a bit of an unexpected place: YouTube creator Unspeakable. The YouTube creator’s content about online gaming, in-person challenges and stunts, includes a video about making the world’s biggest lemonade stand.

That sparked Drew’s idea for Sunny Daze Lemonade.

A cup of fresh-squeezed lemonade costs $5, and after a year of consumer demand, Sunny Daze Lemonade expanded its menu. Current lemonade variations include a $6 Loganberry, $6 Sunny Daze, $2 lemon water and a soon-to-be-added iced tea lemonade.

Sunny Daze Lemonade has a regular booth at the Swampscott Farmers Market on Sundays. The stand will also participate in the Humphrey Street Block Party this weekend, on August 9.

As the business grows, Drew has brought on extra help from friends. Drew said he also is continuing to look for new ways to expand the business.

“Our biggest idea for it would be a food truck or getting a big van and then driving around cities and going to events, selling lemonade there,” Drew said, adding that he hopes to spread the business into Salem for the fall as well.
