Woodworking Camp To Provide Hands-On Experience

A week-long woodworking camp geared toward middle school students will be held between Monday, July 20 and Friday, July 24. The class is a partnership between Swampscott Recreation Department and Swampscott High School manufacturing teacher Brennan Natoli, who will teach the class.

From 9 a.m. to noon each day, participants will learn new skills in the high school’s manufacturing lab and work on building projects that will be completed by week’s end.

The class provides an opportunity to any middle school student with an interest in woodworking or just looking to pick up a new hobby. Along with woodworking, skills like laser cutting and design fundamentals will be instructed.

Recreation Program Coordinator Christina O’Connor said longer length programming, like the woodworking camp, allows students to build off of what they learn one day and apply it to the next day.

“We want to offer variety,” said O’Connor. “This is definitely different from a sport or even an arts and craft program.”

This variety helps make sure there is programming for everyone, from children to adults, the Recreation Department emphasized.

“A lot of the kids otherwise might not get this experience,” said O’Connor. “It could even open new doors for them. It will be great for them to learn from Brennan and I’m really excited for them to get started.”

Open spots for the camp remain. The camp is open to sixth, seventh and eighth-grade students.
