Swampscott resident Beth Shribman was awarded the “First-Time Team Captain of the Year” honor for raising more than $230,000 for the Jimmy Fund Walk for Dana-Farber.
The walk aims to raise funds supporting both adult and pediatric cancer care and research at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. The 37th annual event was held in October and included more than 9,300 walkers and 1,000 volunteers. Shribman participated in the event for her 20th time.
“The Walk is made possible by an extraordinary community of supporters whose dedication, generosity, and drive are fueling the progress we’re making at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. Every step taken and every dollar raised brings us closer to breakthroughs in research and exceptional care for patients and families facing cancer,” said Jessica Abbott, assistant vice president of the Jimmy Fund.
Founded in 1948, the Jimmy Fund directly supports the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. Since then, millions have contributed to saving lives and easing the burden of cancer for patients and families worldwide. The Jimmy Fund is the official charity partner of the Boston Red Sox, the Massachusetts Chiefs of Police Association, the Pan-Mass Challenge, and the Variety Children’s Charity of New England.
The Jimmy Fund Walk follows the Boston Marathon route and offers four distance options: a 5K starting at Dana-Farber’s Longwood Medical Campus, a 10K from Newton, a half marathon from Wellesley, and a full marathon from Hopkinton. Participants may also choose to walk virtually.
Schribman dedicated her walk this past year to her great-nephew JJ, who was diagnosed with cancer. The family launched Team JJ, which became the No. 1 fundraising team of the 2025 walk, rallying 75 members and raising more than $230,000.
“I do it because others can’t,” Shribman said. “The point is to raise the money for the Jimmy Fund and research.”
Shribman had told the Swampscott Tides previously that before the 2025 walk, she had raised about $140,000 over several years.
“Beth’s unwavering commitment to supporting lifesaving cancer research and care at Dana-Farber reflects the very heart of this event,” Abbott said. “We are honored to present her with the First-Time Team Captain of the Year award in recognition of all she does to champion Dana-Farber and the Walk.”
The Jimmy Fund Walk for Dana-Farber has raised more than $197 million in its 37-year history. The event raises more funds than any single-day walk in the nation.
The 2026 Jimmy Fund Walk for Dana-Farber will be held on Sunday, October 4.
