Over a dozen toddlers spent their Friday morning at the Swampscott Public Library reading, relaxing and making animal sounds at a yoga for children program.

Lindsey Kravitz Olson, a certified yoga instructor for both children and adults, leads the program once or twice a month. The morning started with Olson emptying a bag of balls on the library floor for the children to play with. They then took their spots, alongside parents and grandparents, on small mats around the room.

Olson kept the group engaged by relating yoga positions to animals, like a hopping frog or a slithering snake. An interactive reading allowed the children to pretend they were even more animals.

After the group was done with yoga and the reading, a bubble machine lifted their energy right back up to end the program.

Olson has three children of her own between the ages of 11 and 16, and she remembers taking them to the library for activities when they were younger.

“I love coming here,” she said. “It’s a great community. I get to see the kids grow.”

Olson has been teaching yoga at preschools and libraries for years. She says using a melodic tone of voice is the key.

“I have to sing a lot,” said Olson. “Everything that I would say. I sing it instead. You lose them otherwise.”

Olson said she enjoys fostering a positive environment.

“I like to say that my job is sunshine and rainbows,” she said. “Everybody here is happy.”
