For the 60th summer, Swampscott children and adults will head out into the harbor to learn to sail in a few months time, keeping a tradition going that spans generations.

The Swampscott Recreation Department teams up with Friends of Swampscott Sailing (FOSS) each year to put the classes together, which are offered to beginners, children with some experience and adults.

The classes take off from Fisherman’s Beach, and they are very popular around town, selling out almost every year.

Recreation Director Charlotte Daher de Garcia said FOSS spends time and effort preparing and maintaining the boats, providing curriculum and fundraising for any needs for the program.

The program’s fleet is made up of 15-foot sailboats.

“It’s the perfect thing to offer in a town like ours,” said Daher de Garcia. “It’s one of my favorite offerings we have.”

Daher de Garcia said that in addition to learning about the boats and how to sail, participants create friendships and build confidence that can be applied in everyday life.

“For a lot of the kids, it’s their first time out deep in the harbor,” she said.

Sunny afternoons with the boats scattered amongst the water and a breeze blowing have a magical feel to them, Daher de Garcia said.

“It’s an awesome nod to Swampscott’s heritage,” said Daher de Garcia. “We’re so proud to offer it, at a price that’s affordable for most families.

She noted that a lot of children do not get the opportunity to learn to sail right in their hometowns, calling it a privilege that these lessons are possible.

Classes are set to begin in June. Youth classes are in two week increments for third graders and above. Adult classes will take place in four-week increments.
