The Swampscott High School softball team brought the bats on Wednesday, scoring a season high of six runs in a loss to Salem High School.
The team made solid contact throughout the game, spraying the ball around the Swampscott Middle School field and keeping the base-paths busy. Despite the offensive production, the Big Blue couldn’t keep up with Salem, eventually losing 17-6 and falling to 0-7 this season.
“We hit a couple of doubles and a triple,” said Swampscott Head Coach Brittany Coppinger. “I like to see them swinging the bat.”
After falling behind 2-0 in the top of the first inning, the Big Blue answered with two runs of their own in the bottom of the first to even the score.

Salem scored six runs in the second inning to go up for good, but the Big Blue kept fighting. Trailing by eight in the fourth inning, Swampscott scored three runs to cut the deficit to 10-5.
“We’re working on it,” said Coppinger. “We’re putting people in a lot of different positions, trying to figure out what works.”
Younger players on the team have gotten playing time early on the season, which takes away some of the jitters, Coppinger said.
Coppinger gave credit to the Big Blue’s pitchers Mia Tringale and Hayden Haskell for putting in their best effort throughout the chilly morning.
The team will continue to work on every phase of the game, said Coppinger.
“Everything can always be worked on all the way across the board,” said Coppinger. “Maybe next week we can start fresh.”
Swampscott will look to get in the win column when they take the field next on Monday at home against Whittier Regional Vocational Technical School.
