Church Community Grows Closer Through Sharing Snacks, Stories

A disoriented hawk, an unlikely golf shot and a valuable teaching moment were the subject of three of many stories told at Unitarian Universalist Church of Greater Lynn’s “Have I Got a Story for You” event Saturday night.

People gathered at the church in Swampscott with desserts in hand and listened to stories from peers. Some stories were comedic, generating a wave of laughter from the crowd, while others were heartfelt, with a more serious tone. The event raised money and brought the community of the church together, as members learned a little more about each other.

After a successful first rendition of the storytelling event in 2025, bringing it back for another year was a sure thing, according to member Francene Amari-Faulkner.

“We made some good money last year, but people really enjoyed it, which is the important thing,” said Amari-Faulkner.

Amari-Faulkner first encountered a similar event at a church in Concord many years ago and pitched the idea to the board of the UUCGL.

“We build the community through this event,” said Amari-Faulkner. “That’s the goal with any event. So many churches are suffering in attendance. We’re trying to welcome people, and that’s the whole thing with the Unitarian Universalist Church, we welcome everybody.”

Amari-Faulkner emcee’d the event and shared a story herself, telling the audience about a time she helped save a hawk that was stuck inside of the Ted Williams Tunnel in Boston. Amari-Faulkner is certified in helping out injured wildlife and often receives calls for action.

“I think this makes people feel closer to some of the others they see in church,” said Amari-Faulkner.

Along with snacks and storytelling, guests entered raffles for baskets full of different goods.

“This kind of experience goes a little deeper than people sharing in church,” said Amari-Faulkner. “It’s almost like you’re having a coffee with them. It’s just a nice way to connect.”
