Swampscott Library Celebrates Community with Pokémon Hunt, Book Sale, Family Fun Day

The Swampscott Public Library hosted a patron appreciation day on Saturday.

“For me, it’s just about acknowledging and appreciating that they continue to support us year over year,” said Director Jonathan Nichols. “Since I’ve taken over too we’ve seen year over year increased visits to the library. We just want to keep encouraging people to come back and see all the fun things.”

Saturday was the third iteration of the appreciation event. Children ran throughout the library discovering Pokémon Nichols placed – and volunteer teens painted. Those who found them all were able to pick out a Pokémon created in the Maker’s Space.

Bluey and Bingo Heeler also visited in the children’s section. Mandy Roberge, of Wicked Good Henna, offered plant-based dye designs on attendees’ hands and arms, while Victoria Sarkissian created caricatures.

“It’s nice to get out and meet people and see some friendly faces,”  Sarkissian said. “I’ve always had fun doing it.”

The Friends of the Swampscott Public Library hosted a book sale, with proceeds supporting library programming.

“We’re sitting here, just watching kids get so excited about books and about the scavenger hunt,” Sharon Thomas said. “Just to see their little faces light up, it’s just so sweet.”

The Friends of the Swampscott Public Library will host a fundraiser event on Friday, June 12 at 7 p.m., featuring author Mel Allen. Proceeds will support the Children’s Room entrance project.
