With just 2 minutes showing on the clock and the game tied, Swampscott High School’s Victoria Pierro found the back of the net with a shot to give the Big Blue girls lacrosse team a 9-8 victory on Wednesday over North Reading High School in the first round of the Massachusetts Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) state tournament.
It didn’t look great for Swampscott early, after falling behind 3-0 in the first quarter. The team emerged from the locker room after halftime trailing by one goal, 5-4.
The Big Blue, who improved their overall record to 14-4 this season, stormed back to take an 8-5 lead on the way to the playoff win on the road.
In the first few minutes of the second half, Cecelia Tripp took the game over, scoring three consecutive goals herself to give Swampscott a 7-5 lead.
The team surrendered just one goal in the third quarter to swing the momentum. Goalkeeper Lilah Caplan stopped seven North Reading Shots from entering the net over the course of the game, adding to her career total of over 500 saves.
After taking an 8-5 lead, North Reading came back, scoring three straight goals to add some tension to the fourth quarter before Pierro sealed the deal with the game-winning goal.
Tripp scored four goals in total, while Bridget Urbano added two goals and two assists. Pierro, Fiona Keaney, Quinn Kelleher and Reagan Pelletier added one goal each.
When the final horn sounded, the team ran together to celebrate the thrilling victory.
The 19th Seed Big Blue will keep on rolling to Nashoba Regional High School for a round of 16 matchup on Friday evening. Nashoba, who is the 3rd Seed, will enter the game with a 16-3 record.
