Six board members of the Swampscott Democratic Town Committee, including Chair Debbie Friedlander, will step down from their roles following November’s election.

Friedlander, who has served on the board for the past 10 years, announced the changes to committee members at a meeting Wednesday.

The other departing board members are Co-Vice Chairs Anita Farber-Robertson and Jim Peterson, Outreach Director Wayne Godfrey, Treasurer Michelle Fine and Secretary Steve Iannaccone.

“I think it’s time,” said Friedlander. “The country is undergoing a huge change, and it’s time for new ideas.”

Local committees are made up of people who support the Democratic Party and help organize activities in town. In Massachusetts, a committee like Swampscott’s serves as a link between local residents and the broader Democratic Party.

The Swampscott Democratic Town Committee recently hosted an election for 11 delegates and three alternates to attend the Massachusetts Democratic Convention in May. There, delegates helped decide which Democratic candidates would appear on the September primary ballot, including candidates for statewide offices.

“I think now more than ever, the importance of making your voice heard is paramount,” Friedlander told the Swampscott Tides at the time.

The committee will hold elections in January to fill the upcoming vacancies.

Friedlander said she is confident that committee members are ready to step into leadership roles.

“We need a new vision,” said Friedlander. “I’m hoping that younger people step up and reimagine not only the town committee, but the Democratic Party as a whole.”

She said the current presidential administration is forcing the Democratic Party to undergo a major transformation, making this an opportune time for change, even at the local level in Swampscott.

“How else do we get new blood?” said Friedlander.
