Registered Swampscott Democrats elected 11 delegates and three alternates on Wednesday to represent Swampscott at the 2026 Massachusetts Democratic Convention.
Swampscott Democrats selected their delegates and alternates through a single-ballot voting process. Delegates elected by the caucus will attend the Massachusetts Democratic Convention, held Friday, May 29 and Saturday, May 30, at the DCU Center in Worcester. There, delegates will help decide which Democratic candidates will appear on the September primary ballot, including candidates for statewide offices.
The caucus began with a series of two-minute introductions from the nominees who will appear on the ballot at the Massachusetts Democratic Convention in May. Following the introductions, Debbie Friedlander, chair of the Swampscott Democratic Town Committee, explained the responsibilities of delegates, outlined the voting process, provided resources for nominees seeking reconsideration, and read a letter from Stephen Kerrigan, chair of the Massachusetts Democratic Party.
“I think now more than ever, the importance of making your voice heard is paramount, and to see so many new faces here at our caucus gives me hope,” Friedlander told the Swampscott Tides.
Delegates were elected in groups of five to ensure the caucus complied with the affirmative action and outreach plan outlined by the Democratic Party of Massachusetts.
Voting first took place for five female delegates, followed by five male delegates. The final delegate position could be filled by a nominee of either gender.
Each candidate was given the option to deliver a two-minute speech before voting began.
Because there were only three nominees for alternate positions — and the Swampscott Democratic Town Committee was permitted to send four alternates to the 2026 convention — all alternate nominees were elected by a verbal vote.
