Ongoing Survey Explores Interest in Potential Community Life Center

Swampscott’s Community Life Center Feasibility Study Task Force recently opened a survey, seeking public opinion and gauging interest in a potential new life center for all ages.

The survey asks what services and programming residents would want the life center to offer, if they are interested in the idea of the project at all. It went live in the middle of April and will remain open until around the end of June. The survey can be found at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/swampscottclc1.

A 2024 Town Meeting approved spending $100,000 on a feasibility study to evaluating what a potential life center project could look like. The feasibility study task force was commissioned by the Select Board, and it is made up of 11 Swampscott residents, with representation of different committees around town to help manage the process.

Chair Anneka Kumli said the group is hoping for hundreds, if not thousands, of Swampscott residents to express their opinions via the survey.

“The survey is intended to be quick and easy,” said Kumli. “We’re trying to broaden the reach as much as possible.”

The group is exploring reasons why a potential life center could be needed, such as to provide the Recreation Department with appropriate space and facilities, expand the Senior Center to accommodate a wider audience and establish a space where residents could meet and interact.

The survey features 11 questions, with some on demographics and others around what residents would like included in the life center, from outdoor amenities to casual dining offerings and large event space for banquets or a walking track and swimming pool.

Other questions ask if townspeople are aware that the Senior Center has had to turn people away from programming due to a lack of space or if they know the Recreation Department doesn’t have a permanent space.

“The task force is charged with determining if the townspeople want something like this, and if so, how feasible it is,” said Kumli.

Kumli said the hope is that a potential life center would be low cost for Swampscott residents. Abacus Builders, a Boston-based firm with experience with similar projects, has been hired by the town to assist with the management of the feasibility study.

“No decisions have been made on whether or not to do anything,” said Kumli. “It’s up to the people of the town. Their feedback will determine the next steps.”
