Over 400 people shoveled out their cars and driveways on this slow-moving Saturday morning and made their way to Mission on the Bay to celebrate a cultural phenomenon, Galentine’s Day.
The trendy holiday is an adaptation of Valentine’s Day but instead of couples, women celebrate their friendship and support of one another. Galentine’s Day was created in a 2010 episode of Parks and Recreation when Leslie Knope (played by Amy Poehler) dedicated February 13 to celebrating female friendships and sisterhood with brunch and gifts.
Mission on the Bay embraced the holiday on Saturday, February 7 and decked out in shades of pink and red decor. Attendees enjoyed mimosas and bottomless brunch.
“We just wanted to make today extra special for the ladies,” said Mission on the Bay Manager Sophia Augusto. “It’s something for the ladies to enjoy before the Super Bowl.”
Augusto said she enjoyed putting a little extra in decorating the restaurant. Specialty cocktails were offered for the occasion and many members of the staff dressed in pink.
“This Saturday is for the girls, and next Saturday is for the couples,” Augusto said.
A photo booth and a table full of props and accessories were also brought into the restaurant for guests to make some memories from the brunch. At another table, there was a jewelry making station.
“I’m so bummed about the snow but am impressed with how many people dug their cars out and made it,” said Augusto.
One attendee, Kimlee Proeung, said Galentine’s Day is all about sisterhood.
“It’s a place women can uplift each other,” said Proeung.
