Swampscott’s skies turned orange this week thanks to the fires in Canada and Minnesota. Canada has reported 888 active wildfires, as dry vegetation, drought conditions, hot weather and lightning are all contributing factors.

Residents have said that they couldn’t believe the effects Swampscott has seen, while worrying about what it means to the wildlife and nature.

In governmental news, the Swampscott Conservancy gave two scholarships to graduating high school students. The Finance Committee approved the $285,000 year-end transfer, the Housing Authority approved its annual plans, and the Community Life Center Task Force is looking over potential sites for its plans. At the Planning Board meeting, members of the Tree Committee expressed concerns about dying trees and ensuring their replacement.

A group of residents also protested in honor of John Lewis in a “Make Good Trouble” event on Thursday.

“We’re here, we’re making good trouble,” said Michael Paquette. “We’re not violent. We want to get things corrected. There are inequalities that are happening.”

Looking to the weekend, the Bent Water Brewery event is coming back to Fisherman’s Beach on Saturday, and the Recreation Department has plans to host viewings for the final FIFA games.
