The summer is going by fast, and it’s already the end of July! The weather in Swampscott wasn’t too summer-y this past week though, as rain hit the North Shore. The cloudy weather is expected to continue into the weekend.

Even still, Green Day Recycle is hosting an electronics recycling fundraiser on Saturday, August 1 at the St. John The Evangelist Church parking lot.

Residents could also fill out a community outreach survey this weekend, as part of its Municipal Vulnerability Preparedness (MVP) 2.0 planning effort.

Also environmentally conscious: the Massachusetts State Senate passed an economic development package that would regulate micromobility devices, including electric scooters and e-bikes, through a speed-based framework designed to keep pace with evolving technology and address growing safety concerns.

“E-bikes and other micromobility devices are an important part of our transportation system, giving an affordable way for residents to get to work, school, the grocery store, medical appointments, and connect with our public transportation system,” said State Sen. Brendan Crighton (D-Third Essex). “Striking the right balance between accessibility and safety, this policy is a critical step to prevent serious injuries and save lives.”

Pivoting to sports, the father and son duo of Paul and Matt Moran have been hosting boys basketball games and clinics on Monday, Friday and Sunday evenings this summer.

“I’ve been doing it for a long time,” Paul said, of coaching children before they enter high school. “The time was just right. It was a good time to get back. I get to do it with my son and we’ve got a lot of great guys helping out.”

The Summer Snaps women’s flag football league started its playoffs on Thursday at Blocksidge Field. After two first round games and two semifinal games, Brady’s Bunch and the Salty Beaches will be moving on to the championship game next Thursday.

“The camaraderie and community we’ve seen built this season is pretty incredible,” said Kristin Doerrer, a co-founder of Summer Snaps. “The level of play from when we started the season to where we are now is tremendous. We’ve had teams score their first touchdowns and get their first interceptions.”

Also concluding its “season” middle school students put on Shrek the Musical: Kids. Other students finished a film and tv camp with Media and Arts Teacher JoE Douillette.

The Swampscott Tides published a variety of profiles this week as well, from a local artist who is featured in a Brookline park, to Njord Haven’s owner and cook, a true-crime author and even the lobstermen of Fisherman’s Beach.
