Liam Brailey was appointed as the town’s new treasurer/collector on Wednesday.
The Select Board unanimously approved Brailey’s appointment on Wednesday, February 12. Brailey will fill the currently vacant treasurer/collector position. Brailey’s start date is still being finalized, but Town Administrator Nick Connors said the town is planning for “the first half of March.”
“We were lucky enough to meet him in the process of working to build up the finance team,” said Connors. “The reviews that we’ve gotten from folks from Cary, North Carolina – where he is right now – have been absolutely glowing and it’s been a very similar career path, honestly to Patrick’s (Luddy) in a career where following the completion of his MPA he’s moved up in the ranks of currently the budget director.”
Brailey graduated from Elon University in 2019 with a degree in political science and government, according to his LinkedIn profile. He went on to work as a planning intern in Vienna, Virginia, and then as a fellow with Anson County Government. He then went back to school to receive his masters of public administration from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
During his master’s program and after graduating, Brailey worked in Cary, where he rose from finance department intern to financial strategies analyst and, most recently, budget manager.
“I’m really excited to get up there and start doing good work for Swampscott,” Brailey said. “In my experience in budget as well as in the finance department in a couple different places, I’ve got a lot of good experience working with cash management as well as just working in municipal finance, and I’m really excited to come up there and learn about Massachusetts and be a part of the team.”
Brailey will officially join the town about two months after Luddy was appointed finance director, which left the treasurer/collector position vacant.
“We are really excited to have him joining us in a position that is incredibly important, certainly to the community but very specifically to Patrick so we can take one more role off of his plate and focus him on the finance director efforts” Connors said. “We’re really excited to have Liam.”
Connors also announced that CPA Kylie Gates will serve as the assistant town accountant as of next week. Shannon O’Leary is also now the executive assistant to the town administrator and Select Board.
