Step Up for Neighbors in Need: My Brother’s Table to Host 3-Mile Walk Against Hunger

My Brother’s Table will host a 3-mile fundraising walk along the Lynn and Swampscott shoreline on Sunday, October 19.

The walk will begin at The First Church, 40 Monument Ave. in Swampscott, with check-in at 1:30 p.m. and step-off at 2 p.m. The event will be held rain or shine.

“Your steps will support more than just a cause – they support our neighbors,” My Brother’s Table wrote in a press release. “Your participation helps provide free meals, warm hospitality and unconditional love to anyone who comes through our doors.”

Founded in 1982, My Brother’s Table’s mission is to nourish the community with “free meals, hospitality and unconditional love.” Today, it stands as the largest soup kitchen on the North Shore. My Brother’s Table provides meals and a wide range of other services to the community through the support of donors and over 1,500 volunteers.

In addition to serving meals each day of the week, My Brother’s Table provides meals to homebound individuals, participates in a family dinner program, provides meals to at-risk seniors and hosts a free weekly medical clinic.

“This isn’t just a Sunday stroll — it’s a walk with purpose. Even here in Massachusetts, where so many have so much, there are still neighbors struggling to get by,” the organization wrote.

According to Project Bread, more than one in three Massachusetts households experienced food insecurity in 2024. That equates to around 2 million adults affected by food insecurity at some point within the year.  Black and Hispanic households have faced the highest rates of food insecurity in the state, at 46% and 62% respectively. Since 2019, rates among Asian and White households have doubled.

Statewide food insecurity has climbed steadily, from 19% in 2019 to 37% in 2024.

Project Bread notes that living at or below 200% of the federal poverty level strongly predicts food insecurity. In Swampscott, the poverty rate rose to 7% in 2023, a 4.7% increase in just one year, according to Data USA.
