Swampscott High School senior students and teachers met outside of the classroom for an annual showdown on the basketball court that was decided in the game’s final seconds.
“I had a blast playing in the game last night,” said Superintendent Jason Calichman. “I have known those kids since they were in fifth grade, and it was fun to be part of such a wonderful event with them in their senior year.”
After the teachers jumped out to an early first quarter lead, the students came back quickly. At the end of regulation, the score was still tied, sending the friendly matchup to a two-minute overtime period.
A crowd of students watched along, cheered and at times laughed as teachers put their skills on display. The team of senior students allowed athletes of other sports to showcase their talent on the court.
But in the end, it was Connor Chiarello, a leader on the Big Blue boys basketball team, who made the game-winning shot with under ten seconds left in overtime to crush the teachers’ hopes.
The game, put on by the school’s Room of Color group, also featured some games and contests during halftime. Students in attendance participated in basketball shooting contests for the chance to take home gift cards from local businesses.

Temi Bailey, the coordinator of the school’s METCO program and the junior varsity boys basketball coach, said the game is a great way for students and their teachers to connect.
“It’s a fun, relaxed time where students can be vulnerable with their teachers,” said Bailey. “It also gives the seniors a positive experience.”
The game shows the value of the community at the school that is made up by both students and teachers, Bailey said.
“It gives the kids a different perspective of their teachers,” said Bailey. “It’s nice hearing them say positive things about the teachers. They can also learn a thing or two about them.”
