Swampscott Launches 2026 Rain Barrel Program, Orders Open Through April 12

The 2026 Swampscott Rain Barrel Program launched Wednesday, February 4.

Rain barrels capture excess rainwater and turn it into a cost-saving resource, reducing residents’ reliance on municipal or well water. Barrels are available to residents for $80–$90, and the deadline to order is midnight April 12.

“You can save money on watering your lawn by purchasing a rain barrel,” the town shared.

Rain barrels collect water from rooftops for non-potable uses such as watering gardens, lawns and houseplants. They can help reduce stormwater runoff and lower residents’ water bills by providing a free, natural water source for outdoor needs.

According to the town, rain barrels can reduce water bills by up to 40% and save homeowners approximately 1,300 gallons of water each year.

The rain barrels offered through the program are manufactured by Great American Rain Barrel and are made from 100% repurposed, food-grade, UV-protected and BPA-free materials. The barrels are produced in Massachusetts and include screen filters to prevent mosquitoes.

Available colors include forest green, earth brown and Nantucket gray, with an unpainted option as well.

When properly drained and stored during the winter, the barrels are expected to last for many years.

To order, visit greatamericanrainbarrel.com/community and select the town and state.

Rain barrels will be available for pickup Saturday, April 25, from 9 a.m. to noon at the Department of Public Works Yard, 200 Paradise Road.
