Swampscott Library Launches Summer Reading Program, ‘Plant a Seed, Read’

The Swampscott Public Library has launched its summer reading program, “Plant a Seed, Read.”

The program features three tracks tailored to children, teens and adults. Registration opened Thursday night during a library kickoff event featuring activities such as coloring, seed planting, music and a visit from Percy, the library’s read-to-a-dog superstar.

This year’s theme, “Plant a Seed, Read,” aligns with iRead’s nationwide summer reading program. The theme is rooted in the idea that just as farms grow food to fuel bodies, “a library grows ideas that nourish our minds.”

Over the next two months, the library will host a variety of free activities for children, teens and adults aimed at encouraging reading.

Adults earn one raffle ticket for every event they attend, book they log, and activity they complete. Raffle tickets can be entered to win gift cards from Whole Foods, Copper Dog, Dunkin’, and the Peabody Essex Museum (PEM).

Teens can enter to win a variety of prizes, including a cozy reader gift basket and an anime- and manga-themed prize basket.

Children earn collectible “brag tags” as they read and participate in programs throughout the summer, with prizes awarded to all participants who complete the program. Prizes include water bottles – while supplies last – and passes to the Topsfield Fair for all children finishers.

“We’ve planned a wonderful program for kids to make the library a great place to read, learn, and discover what’s available for their enjoyment,” said Lisa Julien-Hayes, the head of children’s services.

Julien-Hayes also emphasized the importance of students reading over the summer.

“Studies also indicate students who read recreationally outperformed those who don’t. Students read more when they can choose materials based on their own interests,” Julien-Hayes said. “Our libraries are committed to supporting lifelong learning and educational enrichment for all families.”

Registration for the reading challenge will remain open through July 25. To learn more and sign up, visit swampscottlibrary.org or check out the library during opening hours.
