Izzy Marcus and Evie Pastrikos will represent Swampscott’s Burke’s Tumbling Academy at the Xcel Regional Qualifiers this weekend.

Xcel is an alternative USA Gymnastics competitive program. Athletes who have qualified at the Xcel State Competition are welcomed to the regional qualifiers, which includes gymnastics from all of New England and New York. The competition will take place at the Shriners Auditorium in Wilmington.

“As coaches we hope that these athletes are able to execute their routines just how we do at practice,”  said coach Sam Amico. “They are in the gym four days a week working to their full potential.”

The Xcel program, created nationally in 2013, includes the bronze, silver, gold, platinum, diamond, and sapphire levels

Marcus qualified for Xcel Gold, which is roughly equivalent to Levels 4 and 5 in the developmental program. Amico said the top 40 athletes in the division qualified for this weekend’s competition based on all-around scores. Pastrikos qualified for Xcel Platinum, an advanced division comparable to Levels 6 and 7. The top 59 athletes in Platinum advanced to regionals.

Both divisions featured more than 200 athletes at the state competition, according to Amico.

Marcus and Pastrikos are the first two athletes from Burke’s Tumbling Academy to qualify for Xcel regionals. Burke’s Tumbling also recently sent Grace Morrison and Andie Maregni to the regional championships in April.

“We are extremely proud of these girls and cannot wait for this weekend to see them compete!” Amico said.
