Swampscott’s Xaviah Bascon Elected Captain of Harvard Football After Standout Junior Season

Swampscott High School graduate Xaviah Bascon has been elected captain of the Harvard University football team.

Bascon was selected following a team-wide vote on Tuesday. He wrapped up his junior season as an All–Ivy League performer.

“X is one of our biggest success stories from SPS. He is such a hard worker, a fantastic leader and an even better kid,” said Superintendent Jason Calichman. “We are so proud of him!”

This past season, Bascon played in all 11 games, rushing for a career-high 626 yards and seven touchdowns. He also set a personal best with 14 receptions for 116 yards and one touchdown. On special teams, he returned four kicks during the 2025 season, averaging 15.5 yards per attempt.

Over his college career, Bascon has rushed for 1,234 yards and 12 touchdowns, along with 215 receiving yards and three receiving touchdowns.

A product of Swampscott’s youth and high school programs, Bascon holds the school’s single-season records for rushing yards (1,509), carries (210), and rushing touchdowns (21). He was named the Boston Globe Division 5 MVP in 2021 and earned Super Bowl MVP honors that same year following Swampscott’s championship win. He was also chosen as the Salem News NEC Offensive Player of the Year in 2021.

After graduating from Swampscott High School, Bascon completed a postgraduate year at Phillips Exeter Academy, earning Team MVP honors at both schools. Across five seasons of high school football, he contributed as a running back, wide receiver, and defensive back.
