‘There are Truly No Limits’: The Nursing Suite Finds Footing on North Shore

When her mother suffered a brain injury that left her in a coma, Rachel West gained an even deeper understanding of the healthcare system — one that went beyond her 25-year career as a nurse.

“I think we’ve all engaged with the U.S. health care system and most would find it lacking,” said West. “We don’t get the answers we need, or we get different answers from different people.”

West’s frustration sparked an idea in her head, and in June she launched The Nursing Suite.

“The Nursing Suite is a group of nurses,” West explained. “It was created to fill the gaps that healthcare should cover but doesn’t. We are there when people need us most.”

The Nursing Suite accepts patients in Swampscott and surrounding towns throughout the North Shore area.

“To have a nurse in your corner, and back pocket to unload cognitive demand is everything,” said West.

West said there aren’t limitations to services offered by the group. She said patients may be an expecting mother in the fourth trimester, or someone in the post-operational phase after a surgery.

“My mother was in a coma for a long time after her traumatic brain injury,” said West. “I hired a concierge doctor to handle medical needs, but I felt that I didn’t need the robustness of a doctor. I wished I had a nurse to talk to, bounce ideas off of and follow up with.”

After launching just over two months ago, West said The Nursing Suite and its team of qualified nurses have started to make some solid traction.

West herself is a breast cancer survivor. She said the fragmentation of care from a patient’s perspective is remarkably vast, leaving many gaps.

“We don’t have a menu of services,” said West. “We’re not limited by what insurance says you can’t have.”

Service could be as simple as helping a mobility limited client with a chore around the house. She noted The Nursing Suite also helps takes some of the burden off of patients’ family members who may be helping out.

“We are creating a specific care plan for individuals for when, where and how you need us,” said West. “Anything you need. There are truly no limits to how often we can come.”

West said her favorite part of the job is feeling the impact of her and other nurses’ presence on a patient.

“I can see people’s shoulders drop when I come in the door,” West said. “I can see the relief on their faces. It feels like a gift to be invited into people’s homes.”
