Kenneth Shutzer
Tell us about yourself and your background.
I am a 50-year practicing attorney concentrating in real estate and municipal law having served on and chaired the Zoning Board of Appeals.
What makes you qualified for this position?
As a Town Meeting member and Precinct 6 chair for over 40 years, one develops a sense of both the needs of the town and areas where concern for the citizens can be best directed.
Why did you choose to live in Swampscott?
I’m a lemming returning to the town where I grew up after law school in Washington DC.
What made you decide to run for this office now?
I was initially asked by a sitting member of the authority to fill a vacant position and graciously accepted and later decided to continue my role by running for election.
What life or professional experiences most shaped your perspective on public service?
As indicated, both as a resident and practicing attorney before the respective boards, committees and commissions I have become keenly aware of both the strengths and perceived weaknesses of town governance and felt that I could contribute.
What are the top three issues facing Swampscott now?
Speaking solely as a candidate for the Housing Authority, the needs of the low income, elderly and disabled are being addressed by the Housing Authority, but more can be done and the integration of town support both financially and through the appreciation of the needs of the less advantaged by a better understanding of the goals and function of the Housing Authority is my singular issue. The complexity of the myriad functions a housing authority is charged would be diminished if confined to three issues facing Swampscott.
If elected, what will be your top priorities for the first year?
Better learn my responsibilities and the role both of the authority and what I can do to promote its success.
How will you make sure residents’ voices are heard?
Listen
If voters remember only one thing about your campaign, what do you hope it is?
As an unchallenged candidate I do not see mounting a memorable campaign.
