The Swampscott music program raised $2,200 for its upcoming trip to Universal Studios during Monday night’s Battle of the Bands.
“It went very well,” music teacher and band director Ed Rovi said.
Five bands took the stage, with teachers making appearances throughout the night. Peter Franklin, who teaches AP English and public speaking at the high school, joked that he was in it for the fame and fortune.
“It’s great,” Franklin said. “The band program at SHS is fantastic, and Edi Rovi has done a great job with this group. The program has really grown and matured under his leadership.”
Franklin played guitar with the band Educated Guess.
Special education teacher Jeremy Wein joked that he “was excited to see if I can actually still play live.” Wein played drums for the band Tim P and the Timmy Timmies.
He said he wanted to help the music program raise funds for its Florida trip because it means a lot.
“I try to show my appreciation for our students in as many ways as possible and this is another way,” Wein said. “When I have the energy, I will do anything to make it easier for them to enjoy their high school experience.”
Middle school guidance counselor Dylan Randall, who played guitar with the band Pop Quiz, agreed.
“One great trip can change the rest of someone’s life, and I’m sure this trip will have that kind of impact for many,” Randall said.
About 50 high school band and chorus students are expected to travel to Universal Studios in March, where they will attend curated workshops and perform at the park.
During an October School Committee meeting, it was presented that the trip will cost about $2,000 per student. Monday’s event went toward the overall cost.
Parents, students, donations, and other fundraising efforts will help cover the expenses.
