Big Blue Bargains Pledges to Match Donations for Jackson Park Track Replacement

Local nonprofit Big Blue Bargains has pledged to match up to $15,000 in community donations toward the construction of a new outdoor track at the Swampscott High School, town officials announced this week.

The matching campaign aims to help replace the aging track at Jackson Park, which has been deemed unsafe for use after tree roots caused sections of the surface to buckle. Because of the deteriorating conditions, the high school track team has been unable to host home meets for the past two years.

Big Blue Bargains, which operates a thrift store selling donated clothes, household items and other gently used items, directs all proceeds to organizations and community programs throughout Swampscott.

“We saw at a Select Board meeting that there needed to be a new track and wondered if it was something we could get involved with,” said Rachel Taradash, board member of Big Blue Bargains.

Taradash said the track was a perfect recipient of aid from Big Blue Bargains because it can be used by so many people around town.

“This checked a lot of boxes for us,” said Taradash. “Things people can use and participate in are great. The schools can use the track for sporting events, but the rest of our community can use it as well.”

Taradash added that the matching campaign is intended to encourage residents to contribute and give back to the community.

Along with serving a broad segment of the community, Tarradash said thedonation is a way to thank the town for allowing Big Blue Bargains to operateinside Clarke Elementary School and to recognize the residents who donate itemsto the thrift shop.

The nonprofit will match community donations dollar for dollar, up to $15,000. Town officials said an online donation portal will soon be available on the Town of Swampscott website.

“Thank you to Big Blue Bargains for your incredible generosity and commitment to investment in our community,” read a post on Swampscott’s town social media page. “Together, we can cross the finish line.”
