About 15 Swampscott students in the National Honor Society and Student Council are volunteering to support the Swampscott Tides’ Fish Tales event on Saturday.
“The people who helped out last year and Anne (Driscoll) helped to spread the word and more people wanted to get involved, which is kind of cool,” said Madison Lilley, who is on both the Honor Society and Student Council.
Lilley said the volunteering efforts are important to “strengthen our relationships with the community.” Honor Society is made up of only seniors this year, Lilley said. She noted this makes it even more special to “make the most of the time we have.”
The event supports the Swampscott Tides, which has been covering the town for the past 10 months. The Swampscott Tides works to ensure readers receive accurate coverage of what’s happening in Swampscott, from School Committee meetings and the town budget to new business openings and community events.
Fish Tales will be held on March 28 at 7 p.m. at the Swampscott High School.
Tickets are now available for the Fish Tales community event, celebrating local storytelling and supporting independent journalism. Kim Carrigan will host the event, with speakers including lawyer and author Robert Jauron, artist Claire Donnelly, magician Anton Andresen, Boston bass player Fran Sheehan, author and attorney Robert Jauron and former METCO student Naina Alves Varela.
“It’s about getting perspectives about people you may have seen or may have known but hearing a story or perspective that you may not have heard before,” Lilley said. “Last year, there was a girl who graduated from Swampscott, and I knew her. I had played on the same volleyball team as her, but she told a story about her family that’s not really one of those things that comes up in a sports setting or a classroom. It was cool to hear her perspective.”
Students will check people into the Fish Tales event. Another group of students will manage a table where people can share their own stories. A few students will also serve as ushers.
“They’re all great people that want to be more involved with their community,” Lilley said.
